Southborough Optometrist Awarded Fellowship in Vision Therapy
Dr. John Abbondanza becomes one of only eight optometrists in
Massachusetts board certified in Vision Therapy
Southborough, MA (April 6, 2006) – Dr. John Abbondanza of Vision Care Specialists in Southborough, received his Fellowship in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) and became one of only eight optometrists in Massachusetts board certified in Vision Therapy. Vision Care Specialists is a family eye care center for those seeking state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options.
Vision therapy is an increasingly important tool for diagnosing and treating functional visual problems such as convergence insufficiency, strabismus (eyes turning in or out), amblyopia (lazy eye) and oculomotor dysfunction (tracking problems). Children diagnosed with ADHD, learning disabilities, autism and dyslexia may also have functional vision problems that interfere with learning and can be appropriate candidates for vision therapy.
“Vision therapy does not seek to replace existing treatments, but is an important consideration for correctly diagnosing specific problems and developing solutions that fit the needs of each individual,” said Dr. Abbondanza. “Our adult patients, as well as the parents of our younger patients, are well educated about available treatments, so we work closely with them to ask the right questions and determine the best course of action.”
Treatments can be as simple as a pair of reading glasses, but also may require a customized plan that includes eye exercises designed to improve the functioning and efficiency of the visual system.
Dr. Abbondanza’s certification was awarded through the COVD, which has prepared doctors to offer state-of-the-art services in behavioral and developmental vision care, vision therapy and visual rehabilitation for more than 30-years. In order to attain the Fellowship, Dr. Abbondanza wrote a series of research papers, successfully passed both written as well as oral exams and submitted clinical reports reviewed by a panel of doctors with expertise in the field. There are approximately 500 COVD Fellows nationwide.
